In situ X-ray diffraction study of a TiO2 nanopowder Spark Plasma Sintering under very high pressure

We investigated the effect of very high pressure on sintering temperature, phase transition and grain growth during Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) a 15 nm TiO2 nanopowder. Using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction at 1.5 3.5 GPa, we followed evolution crystalline phases crystallite size as function temperature. In comparison, laboratory, SPS experiments were performed two original facilities: A Paris-Edinburgh press high-pressure module adapted to standard equipment. studied range 76 MPa GPa. have shown that highly dense nanostructured ceramics can be prepared under low temperatures. At 1 limited an average 233 by heating only 560 °C, achieved relative density 98 %.

Transparent polycrystalline spinel ceramic was fabricated without any sintering aids by spark plasma sintering method of a mixture of Al2O3 and MgO powders for only 10min soak at 1250°C. Densification, microstructure and optical transparency of spinel were examined. The spinel exhibits an in-line transmission of 55% for a visible-wavelength of 470nm and high hardness value of 2040 HV.
